Since the #RethinkinGICT conference at the end of June I have been busy working on the #RethinkingICT Wiki in which I hope to produce a possible replacement or the current ICT Programme of Study. This will basically be what I use in my school from September but i thought it may be of use to others as well.
I am close to finishing the Key Stage 2 Programme of Study and would really appreciate some feedback on the first strand:
Digital Literacy
- Pupils should learn:
- a) how to manage their files and folders (Digital Artefacts) including on the Cloud.
- b) how to use a wider range of Digital Tools (than in KS1).
- c) how to communicate digitally in a safe and responsible manner (e-Safety).
- d) how to collect, sort, search, evaluate, analyse, verify and validate data.
- e) how to check for accuracy and understand bias, copyright and the need to credit sources.
- f) that computers can be used to simulate different scenarios.
I am trying to keep the number of statements to 5 or 6 and want to try and find a balance between offering breadth and freedom whilst also explaining what they actually mean. the idea of the Wiki is that users can drill down further into each of the statements to get more information and resources – I envisage each statement in the PoS to have its own page on the wiki.
Please comment with any thoughts or suggestions.

Think .c needs to also include their ability to cope/react when others do not use communication safely – i..e onus not just on them. So maybe something like
c) develop a clear understanding of the rights and responsibilities of digital communications
Could even combine with e) by being
Understand rights and responsibilities of using digital tools for communication, production and research
Or words to that effect.
Thanks for the suggestions Jodie 🙂 I really like the “understand rights and responsibilities of using digital tools for communication, production and research”. I agree it needs to include their ability to react and cope with the actions of others as well as their own.
Round of applause to you Chris for nailing your colours to the mast as it were. It is always hard to narrow things down to such a small number of points.
My criticism however is e). Accuracy and bias at Key Stage 2. Really? Accuracy and some of the issues on that maybe but bias…

I think Jodie’s suggestion of combining points a) and e) deals with that as accuracy and bias would not then be specified. I really think accuracy of online information is something that we need to teach in KS2 and thinking about work my Y6s do we touch on bias but not enough for it to warrant being specified in the PoS.
Yeah, maybe leaving it a lot more open to peoples’ interpretation re more ‘minor’ issues may be best. Then if people like to go into bias they can. I think copyright is the biggest deal of all in that area for that age
Reliability is definitely something that should be included, but I agree about bias. I think bias is covered elsewhere in the curriculum (History). Great work Chris. Many thanks
