Digital Technology Draft

Here is a draft version of my description of the Digital Technology strand of my new ICT curriculum proposal. This would be made available to parents via our website and also in the ICT department handbook.

Digital Technology

The children we teach are growing up in a world in which they are surrounded by computers. Their homes will be full of devices that are controlled by a computer from the washing machine in the kitchen to the games console in their bedroom. As a result it is important that the children have an understanding of how these devices work and how they communicate with each other.

As the technology that our children use is constantly improving they need to understand what these these improvements mean whether it is the amount of RAM in their laptop, the processing speed of their console or the storage capacity of their iPod.

I also feel that it is important for the children to understand how technology has developed from the days of the telegraph, through the first digital computers such as Colossus and the home computer revolution of the 70s and 80s, into the modern world of smartphones, tablets and cloud computing. An awareness of how quickly the technology has developed will also enable the children to to think about how the technology might continue to develop in the future.
